以下只针对单人战役模式。现在这个年代，FPS其实也就有两种，一种是以使命召唤为代表的基于现实或轻微超现实的军事模拟，另一种则是架空题材幻想型射击，具体到形式上很好划分，前者主要打人，后者除了人还要打别的东西。而体现在玩法上，打人的游戏以掩体阵地战配合载具系统为核心，而打其他东西的，则需要进行更多的机动战斗。当今尽管卖得好的总是使命召唤，但后者阵营里还是有不少精品，比如微软的Halo，2K的无主之地和生化奇兵，以及毛子做的地铁系列。而ID自己的上一款作品，2011年的《狂怒》，也是一个挺不错的参照物。而在这个标准下看2016年的这一作完全重启的《毁灭战士》，首先能看得出，这是款打怪物的机动型FPS，其次，这是款追求，而且只追求纯粹、极致的射击体验的FPS。而这不免让人想起了当年的《狂怒》——很多人可能都不知道ID有过这么一款3A级别的FPS。当年的《狂怒》错误在于太杂乱，好好的正经的FPS之外，又是开放世界又是赛车，次要内容残缺不全却过于喧宾夺主，然而主体内容却压根没多少斤两。而今年的DOOM至少很纯粹，这从你进入游戏的那一刻就能感受出来了——摁了N年的射击游戏三大灵魂键位：R、右键、shift，此时全部失灵！没错，在此游戏中，shift是“走”而不是加速跑，人物始终默认在跑的状态；右键在初期没有任何效果，而到后期起到的也是其他FPS中“技能”的作用，而并非我们习惯的瞄准；
