The 10 Best New Steam Games of September 2026, by Reviews

BC2S · 2026-10-09 · updated 2026-10-24

Short version: We analyzed 101 Steam games released in September 2026 and ranked them by what their players wrote. The top of the list belongs to small games: a golf game with nine holes, a rhythm RPG, a wooden diorama puzzle and a driving game so calm that players joke about dozing off at the wheel. Eight of the top 10 have the same complaint near the top of their list, and it is a kind one: players wanted more. The bottom five are bigger names, held back by bugs, grind and design that players found tedious.

What we read

Steam user reviews of 101 games released between September 1 and 30, 2026, in all languages, up to 500 reviews per game from their first weeks on sale, analyzed on October 6, 8 and 10. Each review is scored on 25 indicators in 8 categories, and the overall score (0 to 100) is the one shown on each game's page: games with few Steam reviews are pulled a little toward the middle, so a handful of glowing reviews cannot top the list alone. How we score games. The full, updating list is on our new releases ranking.

Inside the top 10

What each game does well, and where its players push back. Summarized from what reviewers wrote (the number is how many of the reviews we read made the point).

#1 Normal Golf Game

Almost everything players say is about the swing itself: 79% of the reviews we read discuss gameplay. They describe the controls as "weird and satisfying to play" (80) and say a pure shot feels rewarding because the game asks for consistent, careful play (64). A smaller group says it captures how real golf feels (10). The complaints are about what is missing around the swing, not the swing: only nine holes of pure golf (26), challenges that depend on wind with targets that are hard to read (22), no instant replay (12) and no multiplayer (9).

#2 Nocturne

Nocturne screenshot

Story and sound carry it. Players compare its writing to Undertale for emotional depth (112), call the music "absolutely incredible" (101) and praise the look of its world (63) and its character arcs (13). The rhythm battles mixed with RPG systems are a smaller point, but a positive one (11). Criticism is about pacing: the fourth chapter feels drawn out (16), some characters do not get the closure players wanted (11), inputs can get confusing (10), and the unique mechanics fade after chapter three (8).

#3 Woodo

Woodo screenshot
In game: Woodo. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

Players single out the wooden diorama art direction (162) and a story about love and time that many found deeply moving (148), some to the point of tears (31). The Chinese voice acting (25) and smooth, intuitive controls (12) also come up. Against that: the story is short and its characters thin, with some advising to wait for a sale (62), the mouse wheel camera and depth of field effects cause trouble (17), and a few found the narrative heavy-handed (9) or got motion sickness in long sessions (6).

#4 HoloTrials: Case Covered

HoloTrials: Case Covered screenshot
In game: HoloTrials: Case Covered. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

A free game, and players repeatedly say it feels wrong not to pay for it (52). The character art is "incredibly charming and expressive" (86), the story suits its characters (59) and the interactions between them land (19). The biggest complaint is the smallest kind: one trial only, despite a plural title (19). Beyond that, unclear in-game explanations (4), a few small bugs (4) and awkward 3D scene controls (3).

#5 Slow Roads

Slow Roads screenshot
In game: Slow Roads. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

The most common review is a short, happy one: a great, very cheap game so relaxing that players joke they fell asleep at the wheel, in a good way (237). They describe it as nailing the calm of a long drive (49), with good looking graphics that run well on weak PCs (45) and responsive driving (23), and many see room for it to grow (20). What they want is more of it: scenery that repeats and basic vehicles (28), limited content and languages (27), roads without intersections (12), flat car sounds (9) and no multiplayer (6).

#6 lily's world XD

lily's world XD screenshot
In game: lily's world XD. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

Players value what it says: a story that teaches about discrimination (180) and a mood they call nostalgic and emotional (133), with a friendship at its center that resonated (12). It also splits them. Some feel it tells rather than shows and leaves nothing to work out (29), it is about four hours with an ending that feels rushed (28), and some puzzles send players to a guide (15). Even its tone divides: 10 reviews found it unexpectedly frightening, 10 wanted the scares to be scarier.

#7 20 More, Somehow Even Smaller, Mazes

20 More, Somehow Even Smaller, Mazes screenshot

A free puzzle game with a cute ending (245). Players praise puzzles that combine rules in clever ways and deliver eureka moments (28), difficulty that is satisfying to beat (19) and the puzzles that sit on top of the puzzles (14). The pushback is mild: it is over soon (26), a few puzzles leave players stuck for half an hour (23), and some wish for optional hints at the hardest moments (17).

#8 Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter screenshot
In game: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

The story is the reason to play: an exceptional narrative with strong character arcs (176) and a lead, Estelle, that some reviewers say earns a ten out of ten on her own (55). Players also note smooth performance (28) and a generous free demo (15). The criticism is about the remake itself: it reuses many assets and places from the first chapter (34), new arrangements of the music fall short of the originals for some (27), a late boss is called unreasonable (24) and the opening spoils a lot (16).

#9 Well Dweller

Well Dweller screenshot
In game: Well Dweller. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

A metroidvania praised for its art and map design (117) and for respecting the player's time (95). Tight controls (54), a dark fairy tale atmosphere (45), well designed bosses (39), accessibility options (22) and a distinct track for each area (20) round it out. Its weak spots are the flip side of being friendly: many find it too easy even on higher difficulty (56), it ends in under 10 hours (28), rooms start to repeat (19) and some feel the game points the way so clearly that exploring loses its edge (9).

#9 Driving Rogue

Driving Rogue screenshot
In game: Driving Rogue. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

The core loop is the draw: players call it an impeccably executed fusion of Balatro and racing (156), with controls that are hard but satisfying to master (37) and enough build variety for strategy (23). Its anime style effects and eurobeat soundtrack get their own praise (20). Complaints point at content and balance: only a few maps for now (17), one optimal strategy of driving fast (15), a fourth boss with rubber banding (14) and traffic lane indicators that behave unpredictably (11).

The one complaint they share: too short

Eight of the top 10 have "too short" or "not enough content" among their two most common complaints:

  • Normal Golf Game: only 9 holes for pure golf (26 reviews).
  • Woodo: a short story, "wait for sale" (62).
  • HoloTrials: Case Covered: only one trial, despite a plural title (19).
  • lily's world XD: about 4 hours long, an ending that feels rushed (28).
  • Slow Roads: repetitive scenery and basic vehicles (28), limited content (27).
  • 20 More, Somehow Even Smaller, Mazes: over too soon (26).
  • Well Dweller: under 10 hours (28).
  • Driving Rogue: only a few maps for now (17).

That is the complaint a game wants: players finished it and wanted more. The two exceptions point elsewhere. Nocturne's players found its fourth chapter drawn out (16), and Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter reuses many assets and places from the first chapter (34).

The bottom five: what held them back

97th SILENT HILL: Townfall 54.7 67% 451

100th Minecraft Dungeons II 48.4 63% 414
101st EA SPORTS FC 27 22.5 52% 406

Most of these are not hated. Graveyard Keeper 2 is 76% positive on Steam, and many of its reviews start from affection. What pulls them down is specific.

#97 SILENT HILL: Townfall

SILENT HILL: Townfall screenshot
In game: SILENT HILL: Townfall. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

Players love where it takes place: the town of St. Amelia and its eerie atmosphere (164), its graphics (55), its puzzles (50) and its sound and voice acting (21). The trouble is how it plays. Stealth "becomes tedious waiting simulator" with enemies that track unfairly (92), crashes and stuttering come up nearly as often (88), and some play in fear of losing progress before a save (23). Combat in tight spaces repeats the same pattern (31), and some fans find the story a generic corporate plot without the spiritual side they expect from the series (30).

#97 Graveyard Keeper 2

Graveyard Keeper 2 screenshot
In game: Graveyard Keeper 2. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

Its most common review says "love the game despite convoluted quest design" (118). Players like the pixel art and music (41), a story that moves more steadily than the first game (28), faster travel (19) and new automation and village rebuilding (19). What drags it down is the work: a factory system that confuses players and has no recipe queue (94), a production grind they call tedious (78), a memory leak that crashes long sessions (48) and an awkward inventory (32).

#99 Deskrawl: Idle ARPG

Deskrawl: Idle ARPG screenshot
In game: Deskrawl: Idle ARPG. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

Players find its modes addictive (117) and enjoy experimenting with builds (23). Then progress stalls. Drop rates players call abysmal and a loop that needs endless grinding (99), equipment level requirements that do not match progression (62), and a market full of fake items with pay to trade features (30) are the core complaints, with slow map changes (20) and a difficulty spike past level 20 (12) on top.

#100 Minecraft Dungeons II

Minecraft Dungeons II screenshot
In game: Minecraft Dungeons II. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

Players like how it looks (47) and how it plays with friends (17), and many enjoy it despite launch issues (78). Broken enemy AI (80), no WASD movement (73) and a short campaign for the price (35) pull it down. We looked at it in detail on Thursday: Is Minecraft Dungeons II Worth It?

#101 EA SPORTS FC 27

EA SPORTS FC™ 27 screenshot
In game: EA SPORTS FC™ 27. Screenshot: publisher, Steam store page.

The only game of the 101 that scores below zero in every category. Some players do see progress: gameplay on the Authentic setting feels the best it has (18) and animations improved (8). The rest is about long standing problems: bugs players say have gone unfixed for years (99), a meta built on spamming through balls (69), movement that feels heavy in every mode (48), pressure to spend money (42) and poor performance on high end PCs (19).

What would move the scores

For the top 10, more content would answer the main complaint, and several developers have room to add it: more holes in Normal Golf Game, more trials in HoloTrials, more maps in Driving Rogue. For the bottom five, some problems are fixable and some are design. Crashes and stuttering in SILENT HILL: Townfall, the recipe queue in Graveyard Keeper 2, drop rates in Deskrawl and long standing bugs in EA SPORTS FC 27 are the kind of things patches address. Townfall's stealth pacing and Graveyard Keeper 2's grind are harder to change.

Limits

1) These are reviews from each game's first weeks on sale, when early buyers write most of the reviews.

2) Games released late in September had fewer days of reviews than games released early in the month.

3) The list covers the September releases in our new releases collection, games with at least 300 Steam reviews by early October. Smaller games are not in it.

4) This measures what reviewers wrote, not the games themselves. Steam review counts and positive shares are as of October 5, 2026, and scores as of October 11.
