Is Minecraft Dungeons II Worth It? A Prettier World, Not Enough Game
BC2S · · updated
Short version: Minecraft Dungeons II looks better than the first game and plays well with friends, and players say so. But it scores 48.4 out of 100 to the first game's 79.1, and of the 211 reviews that compare the two, 81 call the sequel worse and 41 better. Its Content Volume ranks 596th of 603 games we analyzed, and its most common complaints are bugs and broken enemy AI (80 of 414 reviews) and the missing WASD controls (73). If you want a quick co-op game to share with family, there is fun here. If you want a deep action RPG, players and critics both point you elsewhere.
What we read
414 Steam user reviews of Minecraft Dungeons II, in all languages, written in its first week (September 29 to October 6, 2026) and analyzed on October 6. Steam lists 8,424 reviews, 63% positive. Each review is scored on 25 indicators in 8 categories, from −5 to +5. How we score games.
The breakdown

Visuals & Sound is its only category above zero, and even that ranks 495th of 544: most games we analyze score higher there.
What players praise: the look and the company
Summarized from what reviewers wrote (the number is how many reviews made the point):
- "Overall very fun despite initial login issues" (78 reviews)
- "Visually stunning, massive improvement, soundscape very pleasing" (47 reviews)
- "Many viable builds and playstyles with enchantments and weapon variety" (18 reviews)
- "One of the greatest co-op experiences, with dynamic difficulty" (17 reviews)
- "Can jump and explore the open world freely" (16 reviews)
"Open world" is the most repeated phrase on the positive side (16 reviews), and several players point out that you can now jump.
What players complain about most
- "Enemy AI broken, enemies track through invisibility, stuck on walls" (80 reviews)
- "No option to change move controls to WASD" (73 reviews)
- "Barely 6 hours long for the price" (35 reviews)
- "Ping in single player causes teleportation, boss attacks cannot be dodged" (23 reviews)
- "No randomized dungeon layouts, everything feels the same" (23 reviews)
The controls complaint comes from PC players who move with the mouse and want the keyboard option common in other action RPGs ("mouse movement" alone appears in 7 more reviews). Variety scores −3.0 and replayability −3.5, which is why Content Volume lands near the very bottom. Gameplay (−1.5, 602nd of 631) is pulled down by the controls and by an enchantment system that 22 reviews call broken.
Better or worse than the first game?
Half the reviews we read (211 of 414) compare it with the first Minecraft Dungeons, so we analyzed that game too, from 402 recent reviews.
| Minecraft Dungeons | Minecraft Dungeons II | Change | |

79.1 | 48.4 | −30.7 |

| Content Volume | −0.5 | −2.6 | −2.1 |
| Visuals & Sound | 3.2 | 0.8 | −2.4 |
| Multiplayer | 2.9 | −0.2 | −3.1 |
| Story & World | 2.0 | −0.6 | −2.6 |

The sequel trails in every category, and Multiplayer falls the most (−3.1), from one of the first game's strengths to below zero. Its own players say so directly: of the 211 reviews that compare the two, 81 call the sequel worse overall, 41 call it better, and 89 weigh it both ways or do not say. This is what they say changed:
| Compared with the first game | Better ↑ | Worse ↓ |
|---|---|---|
| Open world and exploration | 35 | 17 |
| Enchantments, builds and gear | 33 | 33 |
| Combat | 21 | 15 |
| Graphics | 19 | 19 |
| Jumping | 17 | 0 |
| Menus and item stats | 4 | 32 |
| Online and offline characters, account login | 0 | 15 |
| Replayability and endgame | 0 | 14 |
| Dungeon variety | 0 | 13 |
| Content length | 2 | 11 |
The world is what improved. One player calls it "much better than the first with the more open world and less linear levels", and 17 reviews welcome jumping while none miss the old way. What got worse is mostly around the fighting. Item screens no longer show the stats the first game showed ("you cant see damage attack speed etc like you could in the first game"), characters are split between online and offline, and no review says the endgame or dungeon variety improved. Builds split players evenly: 33 find enchanting better, 33 find "much less build variety" than Dungeons 1.
Steam totals point the same way: the first game is 90% positive across 20,148 reviews, the sequel 63% across 8,918.
What critics say
Critics are kinder than Steam players. As of October 9, 2026, Metacritic shows a Metascore of 75 from 34 critic reviews, and OpenCritic a Top Critic Average of 74 with 68% of critics recommending it. CGMagazine (8.5/10) wrote that "it feels like dungeons has finally found its groove". DualShockers (7.5/10) found that "issues with build crafting and repetitive gameplay" keep coming up. GamesRadar+ said it "scores zero points for originality and feels very much like its predecessor".
Critics compared it most often to the first game.
Is there room to improve?
Most of the top complaints are fixable. Enemy AI bugs, single player lag and WASD movement are the kind of things patches address, and the developers have already changed one thing players asked for (the emerald cap, 3 reviews). Length and dungeon variety are harder: they need new content, not fixes.
Limits
1) These reviews come from the first week after launch, when early buyers write most of the reviews and launch bugs weigh heavily. Of the 500 reviews we collected, 42% were positive, lower than Steam's overall 63%, so read the complaint counts as what the loudest early players said.
2) The Minecraft Dungeons reviews are recent ones (October 2025 to October 2026), written five years after its launch, so the score table compares a mature game with a launch week.
3) For the comparison with the first game, we read each of the 211 reviews that mention it, up to 1,500 characters each, and noted what it called better or worse. A review counts as better or worse overall only when it says so, or when one side clearly outweighs the other. This measures what reviewers wrote, not the game itself.
4) Review counts are as of October 6, 2026, and ranks as of October 8, among the 631 games we had analyzed by then.
